Game: Super Mario 64
Purpose: Speedrunning / Skipping levels
Origin: Off-topic forum post with video
Yesterday I made a post about "Bob-omb Clipping" in Super Mario 64, today I will show yet another glitch which is probably the one used the most speedrunners. This glitch is very useful as it will let you skip some levels in the game, other than that it's probably one of the coolest glitches in video game history.
The way this glitch works is that you can get so much backwards speed (by longjumping backwards) that you can go through walls, objects and so on. The developers of Super Mario 64 didn't think about making a speed limit for your backwards speed, the result of that is the possibility of reaching extremely high speeds. This has become the best known glitch in Super Mario 64, and also one of the glitches known to be one of the very best ever found.
Where can you do this?
You can do this pretty much anywhere you can find a staircase or steep hill, although there are many places, you can't do this everywhere. I'll be showing you some of the most common places to perform this glitch, the first one being the infinite stair case leading to the last Bowser. This means you can beat the game without having 70 stars!
If you want to skip the door that leads to the top floor, you can do so as well! It is harder though, as you don't have that much space to longjump on.
How is it done?
First you find a suitable spot, try the infinite staircase for a start. Have your back face the staircase/steep hill then jump into a longjump. Move the analog stick backwards and tap 'A' repeatedly as fast as you can, while still holding 'Z' to perform the longjump. Eventually you will start gaining speed and that speed will only increase over time, that is of course only if you keep tapping fast enough.

The fix
In the Shindou edition of Super Mario 64, a limited edition release of Super Mario 64 that came with Rumble Pack compatibility, improved framterate and graphics, and some bugfixes, didn't suffer from this bug, as it was fixed along with some other bugs. If you are going to get your dusty Nintendo 64 out of the closet and try this glitch you don't need to worry, the Shindou edition was only released in Japan and it is very rare to find today.
